And Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! – www.trafford.com/08-0889 By Majid Al Suleimany – www.majidbooks.com and www.alsuleimany.com – and www.mas-trac.com When we arrived in Karachi, on my route to return to Our Homeland and start a new life in Oman from the country I was born (Zanzibar in East Africa), the plane was already 2 hours too late in departing from Nairobi Airport in Kenya. As a result we missed the connecting flight to Muscat, it had left without us.

There was no other flight till next week after that. Despite our pleas, the Airline refused to help as we were only about 15 from the same connection. There was another flight to Abu Dhabi in 3 days time, so we were accommodated in an International (Air France) hotel near the Airport. As my English was ‘better’ than the others in the group, I ended being the de facto leader and spokesman of the group!

The Airline had told us they could not assign the tickets to any other Airline except theirs and their flights only! When I asked how we would then travel to Muscat, they replied you can take a car from Abu Dhabi and it can take you to Oman.

What they did not tell us that we had to eventually hire a Land Rover 109 pickup, and it would take almost the whole day through rugged terrain via Buraimi to reach Muscat. It was 1972 anyway! Nothing you could do about it!

When we reached the unmarked border, we got our passports stamped through. But just as we were getting into our pickup, there came this old looking ‘Omani type person’. He was trying to ask us if we were interested to change our passports for an UAE one (Abu Dhabi). He asked me if I was educated, and I said Yes. So he said – You can get a very good job in Abu Dhabi if you had this!.

Late Father

My Late Father PBUH

I said No thanks, my (late) Father is waiting for me in Muscat. That did not shake him, but I was firm anyway! When I arrived in Muscat, I got a job in the Army as an Officer Cadet – but I soon realized that the Army disciplined life was not for me being an outspoken forthright person who does not shirk or is scared to express his mind – especially if annoyed and disturbed.

So I joined this Oil Company instead. I ended being a rank of a Senior Supervisor in Human Resources at the end of Early Voluntary Retirement. Those who joined the Army came out as Colonels and Lieutant General and better off too, but that is life for you! You make your choices in life, and you end up having to bear the consequences too! Whether losses or fruits!

Consequences I ended up having too when my Consultancy business went bust, with dreadful consequences and 3 years later I am still trying hard to get my life and ‘knots together’ – so to speak – but that is another story!. I do not want to bore you, because I have said it all before!

Anyway, I ended up looking for another job after going retirement, but that again is life for you! I could not get any job in here, so I tried outside. Imagine my surprise when in my first interview only, the UAE National Human Resources Manager asked if I could start immediately?

It was 2 weeks later after all the necessary documentations and clearances that I started working in this Oil Company in Abu Dhabi. The day I started work, I saw the face of that old man trying to ‘sell me’ his passports. A paradox and eventual unpredicted turn of events! Though I was not a National – as the job required I found to my loss after 9 months on it – I was in charge of Training and Development of National Staff (ADPPOC – IRSHAD), only these Nationals were not Omanis but UAE Nationals.

In all my life in PDO, I had always the photographs of His Majesty in my Office. Here not being a Manager (and in a cubicle too!), I was not allowed by the Company procedures to have the photograph of (Late) Sheikh Zayed (PBUH) and his 2 sons. However, I could put them on my own account. This I did, and with it added the photo of my own Ruler on the side, including the one when HM had paid a visit to then ailing Sh. Zayed.

I raised immediate jealousy and envy from the others working there, who accused me of trying to use the AGCC connection to further my career progression and prospects. This just shows that even the most of innocent, sincere and genuine intention can be twisted by those who wish to do the twisting!

This I too learnt later in life as all too possible with human beings! However, the UAE Nationals were very pleased and happy with me – and they asked me – why Sheikh Zayed? I simply replied he was the Ruler of the country, and I have always been national and patriotic – and why not.

The day I lost the job because the job was being Emiratised, those who did not like me sneered – so where did the keeping of the photographs take you, we did not and still have our jobs, whilst you lost yours!! Amazing and shocking how a simple act can raise so much emotions, hostilities and antipathy in others!! But that too is another story!

There were some Omanis too who had changed their passports, and I was ‘advised’ to apply to save my job – that too I denied. If you ask me after all the troubles I got on later, I still think I did the right thing. That is convincing for you!

The East Africans have this saying – they kill a person already by the early rumours of one’s death, eventually death follows later. When I heard of Sheikh Zayed being so ill, I sent an E-Mail (consoling) to my peers UAE Nationals, but none did reply. Although sometimes we think we are the same, each society reacts differently to a given scenario and situation, but then that too is life, isn’t it?

When I heard the sad and tragic news of the death of HH Sheikh Zayed, I tried to control my tears of sadness. As Arabs we have been brought up that a man to cry is an embarrassment, and we must hold on to our tears as best as we can, otherwise our manhood is at stake.

Life can be twisted really, I have a son who can cry easily, whilst I have a daughter who is as hard as a rock, though she is bursting instead. I think we need to revisit our Big Book of Advices and Wisdom! I always used to watch intently the TV photographs of Late Sheikh Zayed. He not only emanates great statesmanship, leadership and wisdom, but he had always a great sense of amusement and merriment. You always used to see other leaders laugh along, including the Aide de Camps (ADCs) on both sides.

You always wonder what kind of jokes he might be cracking, but you never get to know anyway! When he was with the children, he was most at ease and comfort. They treated him as the ‘grandfather’ and not as a Ruler. You always worry – children being children – they will perhaps misbehave, but the Late Sheikh Zayed had a way with children, and he always controlled the situation!

When he used to go in his motorcades, he would suddenly stop and talk to the peoples on the side of the road. A great benevolent leader, but yet simple and flexible in life. A man of his peoples. A man in touch with his peoples. A man who as a Leader was always ready to listen, and wanted to learn and know what his peoples wanted. He always asked peoples who met him if he could do anything for them, as we are told now in his autobiography.

The thing that really show his leadership is he never forgot his roots, the way he lived and even his food was simple. If you looked at the TV programmes and see how he touched peoples, you can see by the expressions of sadness and unhappiness from all over the Arab and Islamic world, and the whole world in general. From Pakistan, Indonesia, Yemen, Palestine, the AGCC, Europe, USA, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Syria etc. One great leader who touched everybody all over the world! When our HM had personally gone to offer condolences, my family all clapped.

It was a great pride and honour to see HM there to bid farewell to Late His Highness Sheikh Zayed. A chip of the old block is the son, His Highness Sheikh Khailfa – the new President of UAE – and we are all praying that he follows the Father’s steps always – Amin May Allah SWT Bestow eternal peace and a high place in Heaven to Late Sheikh Zayed – Amin – Amin. May Allah too Accept our Fast and Eid Mubarak! Amin (Amen).

I had a very good time in Abu Dhabi – Sad it had to end abruptly! See my book Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! www.trafford.com/08-0889 and Book Redo www.createspace.com/5246843 – The Arab Manager: Psychology, Outlook and Thinking! on what had happened tome there!

Majid A

This article was originally written on November 13 2010 – 5 years ago – and still felt as valid and relevant. Appeared in Knowledge Oman and Oman Daily Observer also!

As kids, we have read all these stories. Most of us have been told these stories by our parents, grandparents or have read them in school too!! How come we conveniently have forgotten all these now?

This is the story of the Father laying on his deathbed and calling his children around him. Then he gives each child a stick and asks them to break the stick in two. Each one of them is able to do that. Then he takes all the sticks and ties them up in a bundle. He then asks each child to do the same. None of them are able to break up the bundle.

Each one of them looks in amazement and awe at their dying father and what he is now up to. Then the father cautions – so long as you stick together as one, nothing will ever happen to you in your lives. But if you get out of the bundle and be as a single stick, everyone outside can break you into two. You must always be together and act as one. Remember this always my children! If you want to bring in drama and heroics in, the father soon dies after saying this. In real life, the father lives a bit longer, before the last breath leaves his body, giving enough time for his children to do their home works and comprehend their father’s teachings!

A long time ago when I was in Secondary School in that distant land, this was the time of the Apartheid system in South Africa. We had some Black Africans from South Africa who were there as refugees, and some of them joined our school too. At that time, I was the Head Prefect of our wing in school, and one of my jobs was to invite and welcome new students in the school. This particular student was very hostile to me. He used to tell the local African students why do you keep a ‘coloured’ (I came to know later it meant Arabs and Asians in his left behind country, and as his white African brothers peers were ruling the country in their absence). Why do you keep this coloured as your Head Prefect? Are you not ashamed of yourselves? Have you no pride? What is wrong with you peoples?

All Under One Flag – Feel And Act As One!

I was really taken aback by these unprovoked and uncalled for challenges, when all that I was trying was to make the guy feel welcome and at home, as my job duties, aspects and responsibilities called on up on me to do so. I got very angry and annoyed and decided to quit. The Students Council and The School Management refused to accept this, and I was really touched to see the students stand up (most of them fellow blacks but of another country) and tell the guy off. In the end, this chap became my very good friend, as the knack in me to bring friendships and trust where previously there was hostility and annoyance.

All the students told him off – he was selected by us not because of his colour but by the trust, faith, credibility and confidence that we have on him – and nothing else – and he is one of us. You – you are a stranger and guest to our country – so please behave as one!

Long time ago I was forced as part of the college curriculum in that place to read about Socialism. In one of the Marxist theories, they believed in breaking up law and order by the use of a gun (actual words peace comes through the barrel of the gun!). One of their theories was to divide the peoples and leadership by such tactics and show the leadership in poor format. But the punch line was – Divide and conquer.

Late Father

My Late Father PBUH – He went to Zanzibar Africa at age of 22 with my late elder brother and sister. His parents like him were all born in Oman. So my maternal grandparents – from Manah to Hayll Al Ghaaf – Quriyat! Rest of us born there!

That is a plain message when you want to divide and split your enemy, by giving colouring and specifics to peoples, so they end up paying homage and more interests in this than at looking as they say the bigger picture. Or not looking outside the box. Or not seeing the forest because of the trees.

One country that I really admire is India. Where else in the world you would have a Muslim President, a Sikh Prime Minister, and a Christian as a Defence Minister. Whichever part of India you come from, you are one as First Indian. The same case is in USA with their multi-ethnic backgrounds, with a Black American as Secretary of State. Then you have all the mix, and even refugees to the country can make it to being rich and high positions of state (Remember Dr. Kissinger and Madeline Albright?). Now President Obama – the first non-white USA President.

For our future generations and for record in history books, we need to impart on our younger generations that due to the complexities involved in our history, we may come from different backgrounds – but we are first and foremost as first Omanis and this is the only country that God has given to us as our own. We need to stop these polarizations and bringing up artificial splits and divisions. Remove all these pointing out fingers. Remove all the jealousies, envies and what have you. In the global village we are now in, we cannot afford such things and must be shunned at all costs.

One time while studying in UK in my Business Studies, I made a grave mistake to talk badly about one Indian descendant guy but nationality of a different country. The guys from that land (if you want to say original owners of the land or natives) were pissed off with me and put me directly into my place.

I make the call again today.

We are all as Omanis as one people. We must all be as ONE and love each other as ONE. Despite any artificial differences or nature, we are as one. We see things unfolding in front of our eyes in other places, and we must learn from these. There is nothing as bad and ugly as seeing things gone wrong in other places, and you as a human being with God’s graces and intelligence and wisdom given not doing anything to change and or confirm. We become only worse than animals.

*** We can still do Much more***

We as Omanis can still do much MORE by loving each other MORE; be MORE kind, gentle, caring, generous and feeling to each other MORE, support each other MORE, be one people under one flag and one Nation under HM MORE; help, assist and co operate with each other MORE; avoid differentiating, polarising, friction avoidance MORE – and not let others outsiders interfere and try to divide and split us MORE.

We owe it to HM, our beloved nation, our history, traditions, heritage, culture, customs and values more. HM has made great personal and self sacrifices for us all Omanis that today we can hold our heads high with pride, esteem and dignity. It is not what we think and feel – but we will be judged by our ACTIONS – and not empty WORDS or RHETORICS!

The time to do that is now, not tomorrow. Just Now!

We wish him a very long life and health – and for the renaissance and enlightment to ever continue and move ever forward – Amin.

It has been a long time since I wrote anything – so please bear with me! 🙂

The other day at a Supermarket in town I met this ex-boss also shopping. There is nothing he can do to me now – even touch a hair on my head – but me being me I thought I would be nice and pass some pleasantries to him! So I remarked to him – Please keep it up! You are maintaining your figure and keeping fit!

Instead of saying the usual Thanks! And even curse under your breath if you want – he looked me up and down – and his usual self of meanness, wickedness and being dastardly he retorted – And you? Getting fatter now! You cannot even walk properly now! Hey – that is dangerous for you – you know?

I looked at him up and down – and was going to give him a BIG piece of my mind – when the good side of me got better of me – and I just stammered unintelligently Seeing his pride and joy at ‘hurting me again’ he walked away from me – but the nice neighbourly girl he was with crisply replied back to him – No! You got it wrong! He has actually lost weight!

What losing weight? He retorted – Do not give him a big head! Watch it my friend! He said – as walking away from me with the girl they came shopping together – or had met there – I would not know!

As I had finished shopping – I met him at the Paying Counter as he was head of me – and he had just finished shopping – and he was arguing with the poor Omani Sales Girl that she gave him less change by one Omani Rial! Can you imagine? Just one Rial? And he was one of the highest paid guys in the company then! The girl was arguing defensively that she gave him the Right Change! But he insisted she was mistaken! The poor girl took one Rial more from the counter and gave him. Pleased with his winning he went away!

As I was clearing my purchases, the girl was helping me to put the goods in the plastic bags. I was thinking to myself that this poor girl will have one Rial deducted from her salary at ends takings – because of this mean person – so I volunteered her ‘to keep the change’! A few Rials anyway in compensation!

This person was a very sick person for a long time – and you would have imagined that he would have changed! He was mean as usual – especially to ‘those he disliked’ and ‘not in his Favour List’! As I always say – you can never take the spots away from a leopard – or stripes from a tiger! Or as the famous Arab story of the Frog and the Scorpion – I just cannot change! It is just by my nature!

***

Your Reputation Precedes You!

I meet this friend of mine – an Omani Engineer! As a Technician Student then, I looked after him. He is now in the ranks of a General Manager of a new Consultancy firm – after retiring also!

So I tease him – I know the answer already! Any chance of a Temporary, Part-time or Consultancy job in HR, Training or Omanisation? He says to me – send me your CV – I will see if anything can be done! But mind you – I am not promising anything! So I put him at ease – I am just teasing and joking you!

Not really interested to be insulted again by even our own impudent Youngsters that have grown ‘too big for their shoes’! Let alone Foreigners and Old Guards before as the norm! I am not interested to work for anyone now – and end not delayed in payments – or even the dreaded ‘not paying you at all’ after delivery of services rendered by finding excuses and technicalities ensured that you do not get paid!

For example did not get the contract – what has that got to do with me? Everything – the young Omani GM says to me – your work as part of the bid – was not successful to get the bid! Or you get paid by difficulties – 3 months later – after threats and counter threats of legal action!

Adding salt to wound – he calmly says to me – M – Your Reputation Precedes You! People know that they cannot push you around – that you refuse to push dirt under the carpet! You stand your grounds! And what guaranty they have that you will not write about the incidents in the company in your new Management books? Now that your columns have been killed – by a Technicality? By also a Younger (New) Omani brother? Think about it!

I have, Brother! I retort! I have! I was just teasing and joking you! It is not sour grapes! Take it in the right way it is presented! Not only for the above reasons – but I even now give advices to those College students if they should specialize in HR?

I tell them point blank! You will be crazy to go into HR – the way things are brewing (burning) in the Offices now – like what I always say – like that cinder fire burning intensely underneath – waiting to explode at any time! When I wrote my article More Serious Issues At Stake! I had a sinking inner feeling – an Omen – a premonition – that ‘this article will now end my columns for good now!

I am not trying to be smart now – but the East African say – Those that deny you beans (mbaazi) are just reducing your gas intake (farts!). Or that one going up the ladder – wait for him at the bottom! Or as Good Karma saysDo Not Go for Revenge! God will allow you to see your enemies screw up in life! Like fighting as a well-paid person about One Rial with a Sales Girl!

About The Book!

I        PREFACE

This book is the 11th book in The Series – Between Us Only! And my 21st book so far.

It is recommended that this book be read together with this book: –

Writing: My Passion! – www.createspace.com/5085322

* Also – Goodbye; Between Us Only! – www.createspace.com/5139836

There were some articles missed out in the above * book after the end and the collapse of my column articles in November 2013 – more than a year ago!

What is of paramount importance is to get all my articles Post last Between Us Only1 series – Wipe My Tears! The book was published in June 2013 – all intended to put all my books in one place for further references and for record purposes!

I have also included all those articles after end of my columns mainly based on ‘a Technicality’ that was designed to stop and to end my columns.

I was keeping to myself and trying to avoid conflict – but still people were after me! So I decided to accept the challenge – and write and record this book as last of my columns writings for future records and references.

No one can kill the spirit, soul and heart of a Writer – because so long as a Writer will live he will not stop writing!

As Jules Renard had said – No one considers a Writer as ridiculous – even if he does not make any money! So there! Besides, I had posted this in all The Social Media – November 13, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

I have read Majid’s Road Safety book and it is comprehensive with real cases of accidents. I used the book to train team members on accident investigations, however; it is very useful to prevent ourselves from falling into the same situations.

Recently; It came to my knowledge that a local is burnt while splashing petrol on dry wood fire in order to improve burning but unfortunately he got burnt and currently at burns ward. How many cases had and have occurred and why don’t we learn? Mostly, we do not read! Regards, Engineer Ahmed Al-Mazrouy

If u invite Einstein today for a science seminar and then invite a naked woman for a press conference, the public would leave Einstein and his science and gather around the naked woman. This is not our fault.  Its all because most of the people run after their fantasy and desires. Therefore they encourage the silly issues and run away from serious issues – Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud

Writing is a Passion of Writers, Authors and Columnists – and will not die even after the Author’s death – because his works will always be there to be viewed and be read by future generations! As we have seen books still doing rounds by Authors long time gone centuries ago!

Thus those ‘acting as God’ to stop and prevent your writings are just deluding themselves more than anybody else! Just keep praying for them to return to the right path and ways – Ameen – Amen – and for Good Karma!

For Bad Karma says – Those who cause you hurt and pain – do not go for revenge – because God will let you watch as they ‘screw up’ in life! The East Africans also say – The man who goes up the ladder will come down sooner or later! Or as the Chinese say – if you are going to dig a grave for your enemy – dig two graves – and one keep for yourself!

G.02            From The Newspaper!

Fan (Omani) – I think your reaction to the newspaper was to the point. My only advice is that don’t allow the other party to get the best of you. Don’t sound emotional. Just give them your piece of mind and move on…

***

Lady Fan (Omani)  – Well , its one’s duty to speak up when things don’t go well, if I were you I would have kept quiet cause its just like talking to a wall. It’s not heard and nobody cares. It’s just losing your face over and over again and nobody cares. I will never agree with you the way you humiliate yourself. You are a talented man you deserve the best of the respect. Be calm Majid it won’t harm you and Allah sees everything. Be patient. If one door closes the other will open. Believe me!

***

Fan (Omani) – Spot on. I think there is a lot of hypocrisy in our society. You call a spade a spade and that’s quite admirable. Very few people have the guts to go openly public in expressing a critical opinion. Did you get any response?

From A Dr. Ph.D. – Dr. Faris Al Hajri – See Comments Here

Dear Mr. Majid, We strongly support your endeavor. Remember, the best writers, noble people, celebrities, scientists, etc., were at first neglected by their own people; that is in West during the past centuries. But; today it all changed. So keep up, never give up, you’re a very great writer, never let any negative people or pessimistic people put you down, the most you succeed, the more their feel ashamed of their wrong acts.

Finally, the Universe will respond to you abundantly. Keep up with those who are attracted by you, keep some distance to those who neglect you.

Keep looking at your achievements most whenever you get upset of a specific incident. You’re great in the eyes of many who deserve to see your smiles.  Cheers!!!

Senior Omani Professional – I admire your guts and in your sincerity to want to make changes in things before they go really bad!

Some others ‘too personal’ to include here – but equally good (or have requested anonymity)!

As received…..

Sir – We are with you always!

Yesterday night a group of us good getting together friends were having a meal at this Arabian Restaurant in Ghobrah and the subject starting moved to your columns articles. And your call about more Omanis to be needed represented in the especially English press and media as it is now being controlling and dominated by Indian people mainly and also some British peoples.

You also called for more stronger quality powering Omani Managers in the Press and media. Believe me Sir that people mistake us to be not knowing and not smart people and they can fool and play with us. But if they cannot learn than they will never learn in future. We are not stupid peoples. We aware and knowing too.

So Ustaadh please rest now. You have said it but they ignore you and not listen. You have done your job and duty as few Omanis that really care and feel. You take rest because you are now done and take rest Sir. Look after family only now.

Like you always tell us to take care! Ever admirer and fan to you Sir. We will never forget you till end of us.

Please forgive my English. Omani (Young) Fan…

Dear Ustaadh Majid;

Thank you about the information about your new Road Safety book Arabic – Behind The Wheel!

 – www.createspace.com/4875352   خلف عجلة القيادة

I would like to express my appreciation of your kind efforts to deliver to my office your two Arab Management books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! – www.trafford.com/08-0889 – and A Cry For Help! –

http://bookstore.trafford.com/Products/SKU-000142695/A-Cry-For-Help.aspx .

More importantly for writing these books and letting the rest of us in the country and the world the issues and aspects that have been troubling you for such a long time and your feelings that you needed to write these books as information to the rest and detailing your own personal experiences and exposures over 35 years and most of it being in PDO of 25 years services and as a Human Resources Management Consultant for later years.

I am pleased to inform you that I have now read both the books and am lost in words of where to start, pause or end! You have done a brilliant work and your efforts need to be recommended and to be appreciated.

I have recommended your books to my colleagues as Essential Reading for us in The Leadership. I personally think this far outweighs any monetary and other awards that you may have received so far.

My Congratulations and Thanks once again. Please let me know if you are writing any sequels and when The Road Safety Book will be available locally in Oman.

Please accept best regards and wishes

AAWW – After Compliments

I talked to my USA Publishers about our discussions yesterday on my books. Here is their response.

 Quote

Dear Mr. Suleimany

Thanks for your email on the points raised.

All your books including even the new ones have been independently reviewed by Books Subjects Experts including Eric Hoffer establishment and that includes also Independent Assessors in Kindle.

The feedback were all sent to you and mainly being highly commendable and very positive with only some highlighters here and there. That is the reason why your Psychology Book had won The USA Golden Seal of Literary Excellence Award for 2013.

It is true that the Assessments and Reviews are found outside the book but we have a Policy of publishing your book within 6 to 8 weeks once full PDF works have been produced to us.

We do not wait for Assessments Reviews etc. to be included in the books because in that way we allow the Reader to form his own independent opinions before reading what others are thinking about the book. This is in its best format Literary Excellency and Freedom to the Reader. The quoted examples in your country are perhaps because of too much censoring and editing bureaucracy and thus the need to include in the books before publishing.

Mr. Suleimany, you know well with 12 books that is not how we operate as Publishers and for USA books publishing. We do not have this requirement in USA.

You have achieved a great deal and have done great works and you should hold your head high and brim with excitement and pride with your achievements.

Please do not let anyone make you feel down or small because as a Writer you cannot please everyone and there will always be some dead set against your books from the start for their own personal or other reasons. Especially as your books cover real core hard stuff that many are scared stiff to touch even by a long pole!

Have A Great Day!

End Quote

Best Regards.

Majid Al Suleimany

Advantages of eBooks and Kindle to Hard Copies:-

  • Latest technology and innovation.
  • Far Cheaper Prices – Around 10 Dollars.
  • You can download at your own pace and privacy and directly to PC Mobile etc. after payments
  • You can load as many books as you want in your PC
  • No hassles to go to Bookshops, Parking etc.
  • Nobody can borrow your eBook – and fail to return it!
  • Our Oman and GCC Bookshops have still not learnt the lessons of ‘Not Wanting to Support Local Authors”!
  • Beg The Owners and Senior Staffers (mainly our ‘Good Indian Friends’!) to support you to stock your books – even if viciously they are losing more money from already a declining business!
  • Even if some Bookshops are closing down!
  • And as now no one is buying books – because people simply put smugly – People Do Not Read!
  • A Society that does not read will probably end in obscurity and great doubt of its future in history and legacy!
  • So many others!
